So the Aspers Casino at Westfield opened today. 440 new jobs and, we're told, economic benefits for Newham residents. I understand that Newham Council will be receiving an annual £1 million from the profits made by the casino. I went and took a look at Newham’s latest attraction (I didn’t go inside – I’ve worked in the gaming industry, so I know who wins and who loses). I took some photos:
Taking into consideration the original tendering process for a casino stressed the importance of regeneration, here’s two images of what would have been at the Royal Docks had one of the other bids been successful (I understand this bidder offered Newham £2.5 million a year from the profits):
